Piazza della Signoria is the main square of Florence, a world known place and undoubtedly the most important symbol of the city. A symbol of the rulers' power, it tooks its current form in the 13th century and later became the setting of historical events and triumphs such as the return to power of the House of Medici in 1530. The square is filled with beautiful monuments such as the Loggia della Signoria, or Loggia dei Lanzi, which runs along one of its sides; Palazzo Vecchio, seat of the government of the Republic until the 16th century and then used as the town hall; numerous statues such as the equestrian statue of Cosimo I sculpted by Giambologna; the statue of Neptune; the Marzocco and Judith and Holofernes, both replicas of Donatello's statues, and the famous statue of David by Michelangelo, also a replica. This bustling centre was of course chosen to be part of Hiding in Florence project.
