The room chosen for the first shot inside the Uffizi Gallery is the Niobe Room (Sala della Niobe). Liu Bolin was instantly impressed with the way the myth is represented in this large and immersive room located on the second floor of the Uffizi. It is a neoclassical room with black and white chequered flooring filled with statues, Roman replicas of Greek originals, set out in a theatrical and dramatic way to tell the story of Niobe, proud mother of fourteen children, seven boys and seven girls. The goddess Leto, who had only given birth to two children and wanting to punish Niobe for her pride, sent Artemis and Apollo to kill her numerous offspring. The Roman poet Ovid says that Niobe, struck with terror, turned into a block of marble and her unceasing tears of pain into a spring. The main piece of the statue group is precisely Niobe, depicted in the act of protecting her daughter as she gazes up at the sky in terror. The place chosen by Liu Bolin for his camouflage is exactly here, right in front of this story of pride and revenge.In 2023, the artwork has become part of the permanent collection of the Uffizi Gallery, which features the largest collection of self-portraits in the world.
