Iain Andrews' paintings begin as a dialogue, both with a particular Folk Tale and also with an image from art history – often a painting by an Old Master that may then be used as a starting point from which to playfully but reverently deviate. Making paintings is the way he makes sense of the narratives and stories that he encounters during his work as an Art Psychotherapist with teenagers, many of whom have tales of neglect and abuse.
Iain Andrews is a British artist born in Birmingham in 1974, who currently lives and works in Manchester, UK. After graduating from Aberystwyth University of Wales with a Bachelor’s degree in Painting, he continued his studies to obtain a postgraduate diploma in Art Therapy at Sheffield University. This dualism between art and psychology played a crucial role in shaping his artistic practice, allowing him to integrate a deep understanding of the human psyche into his works.
Andrews' work is characterized by a unique approach that blends pictorial elements of contemporary abstract art with traditional techniques from Renaissance and Victorian painting. His paintings are known for their strong narrative and symbolic content, which often reflects themes of change. Over the years, Andrews' work has been well received by critics, with positive reviews on major platforms such as the UK daily newspaper The Guardian and the BBC.
John Edward McKenzie Lucie-Smith, a famous British art critic and journalist has described Andrews' works as "the substance of dreams" underlining how they manage to capture what moves through consciousness in a contemplative state, between sleep and wakefulness. Lucie-Smith says there is no other young British painter who can do it so effectively.
Iain Andrews' works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions all over the world including the 58th Venice Biennale "Personal Structures" runs at the Paper Pavilion, Palazzo Mora", Warrington Museum London -UK-"Mythopoeia", International Gallery of Contemporary Art, Anchorage, Alaska "Paint Fiction", Tate Liverpool -UK- "Beautiful Things", Kyoto, Japan Art Spot "Thing Worlds" National Gallery and Museum of Poland, "Made in Britain - British painting in the 21st century", Hefei Museum of Modern Art, Anhui, China, "TaoHuaTan International artists" Bowes Museum Durham -UK "New Light art prize exhibition"National Pastime Theatre, Chicago -US-"International Beethoven Project".
Throughout his career he has received numerous awards such as the National Art Open, the Jackson’s Art Prize in 2023 and the Marmite Painting Prize in 2011.
Iain Andrews' research demonstrates how art can be a powerful tool for psychological exploration, Interweaving his artistic talent with a deep understanding of the human condition, affirming his continued interest in the world of fairy tales which have always fascinated him for their ability to capture those profound feelings through a universal language that speak not only to the mind, but also to the most primitive senses and emotions.
