Turi Simeti was born in Alcamo on August 5, 1929.

His first studies took place in Rome, in contact with Alberto Burri, but it was from the early sixties, especially in Milan, that he developed his personal language as an artist. Influenced by the experiences of the group Zero, a movement born in Germany that supported a zeroing of tradition as well as of the codes of figurative art, Simeti devoted himself to monochromy and its modulation, with particular attention to the shape of the ellipse.

In 1965 he participated in the international exhibition Zero Avantgarde in the studio of Lucio Fontana, together with artists like Piero Manzoni, Hans Haacke, Yayoi Kusama, Agostino Bonalumi, Enrico Castellani. This will be followed by the collaboration with several galleries such as Il Punto di Torino, Il Cavallino di Venezia, Il Chiodo in Palermo and Galerie Wulfengasse in Klagenfurt. Between 1966 and 1969, he was invited as Artist in Residence by Fairleigh Dickinson University, and went to New York for several periods.

His success abroad was a crescendo, thank to the consensus in Switzerland and Germany, then with several exhibitions in major European cities, until the opening of a studio in Rio de Janeiro.

Many personal exhibitions and collaborations, accompanied by constant research and the development of volumetric elements on the surface, with a diversification in colour and intensity capable of generating a space-architecture, a space-sculpture, a space, in short, that poses questions about art.

Demetrio Paparoni wrote about:

(Turi Simeti) . . . “he conceived the painting as an autonomous object that does not illustrate, does not tell, does not represent. As autonomous objects protruding into space as high-reliefs, these works can be considered as paintings as sculptures. They can be both or neither. ”

In 2016 the general catalogue was published in two volumes, thanks to the work of the Turi Simeti Archive, edited by Antonio Addamiano and Federico Sardella. 1,800 artworks on canvas dating from 1960, as well as exhibitions, projects, solo and group exhibitions.

He left us with an immense artistic legacy on March 16, 2021.
