The artwork Pietà of Michelangelo, Sforza Castle, Milan (Pietà di Michelangelo, Castello Sforzesco, Milano) assumes a particular relevance in Liu Bolin's artistic work given the special relation with sculpture of the Chinese artist, who trained as a sculptor and was a pupil of the famous artist Sui Jianguo, his mentor at Central Academy of Art in Beijing (in which Liu Bolin also taught sculpture). Obviously the comparison with the master of the Italian Renaissance was strongly sought by Liu Bolin, who stated: "When I saw the last Pietà by Michelangelo, the so-called Pietà Rondanini, which is the statue he worked on until the end of his life, I drew from it an immense source of inspiration. A great artist such as Michelangelo can only encourage me to continue my work".
