On June 19, Danilo Bucchi inaugurated the 2024 Estate al Maxxi program with a special event featuring his latest project, Oltretutto. In a new approach, where he is not the author of his canvases but instead engages with photographic language as an observer/orchestrator of other people’s drawings—portraits of writers, directors, actors, designers, musicians, curators, and museum directors he encountered in the streets of Rome, Milan, Berlin, Paris, New York, and Tokyo—Oltretutto is a complex work that occupied Bucchi for nearly ten years. It has resulted in a curated catalog published by DRAGO, produced with the support of Gaburro Gallery. This art book takes Bucchi beyond his classic dimension and into the editorial form; a new artistic endeavor where his work, the one that has made him a prominent figure in contemporary art and collecting, is not the focus, but rather the drawings of others, placed alongside his own photographic portraits.
Curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, Oltretutto is a reasoned catalog that gives voice to faces and images, narrating a private story through portraiture that Bucchi has made both intelligible and emotional; a project consistent with the artist’s exploration of the language of the sign and its unconscious origins, but this time presenting him as a photographer and spectator of others’ drawings. The artist’s eye peers into both the internal and external dimensions of his subjects, juxtaposing them with their drawings, generating a suggestion that is open to interpretation by the viewer, ready to intertwine with personal experiences in a voyeuristic journey towards knowledge. Through the language of photography, Danilo Bucchi traces this unconscious dimension in Oltretutto, with a journey in 160 pages that transcends the boundaries of artistic research.
